A Guest Again

As some of you know, I am planning to self-publish the book, probably through a service like Infinity Publishing or Alibris.  Self-published books aren’t always the most polished productions, but one of my top goals is to ensure that the production and quality are high-level.  In the meantime, here is a self-published book (through Infinity) which I enjoyed reading, and which gives a good feel for the concept and the industry.  The book is a non-fiction memoir of the author’s travels around the county, filled with anecdotes, jokes, and observations about life.  I am pleased to recommend it.

Chapter Update

I’ve completed revisions for the New Mexico chapter, which tells the story of our visit to the Jicarilla Apache reservation lands in Northwestern New Mexico.  This was previously published on the Bootsnall.com web site, so there isn’t much to revise.  (Here’s my previous post about the chapter, which includes a link to the article.)  I’m also making progress on the bibliography, and on the decision regarding an illustrator, which I described in my last two postings.  The only major project left is a rework of the Utah chapter, which is about the Great Salt Lake.  There is a bit of a “National Geographic” feel to the text, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but is not the only effect I want to create.  I hope to complete this last task by the summer.

More Than One Illustrator, Part 2

I contacted the Society of American Illustrators in New York, the famous society founded by N. C. Wyeth and other noted illustrators, about the dilemma I described in the last post. They told me that there is no hard and fast rule, but that visual consistency is desirable. They added that if I did want to have several illustrators, it might be better to organize them by theme or chapter. My wife, who works in the publishing industry, offered similar advice. In light of this, I am considering having one illustrator for each chapter. I will keep you updated on this decision.
